How did you meet your spouse?

Happy Valentine’s Day! Today I thought I’d open up the comments and ask everyone to tell me how you met your spouse. I’ll go first.

My husband and I have been married 21 years (22 this year). We dated for 6 years before we got married so we’ve been together 27 years. WOW! I wouldn’t change a thing about him and I love him more today than I did yesterday. He’s the neatness to my sloppiness, the calm to my storm, the frugal to my, well, not so frugalness. In a lot of ways we’re so much opposite but we’re also a lot alike and I wouldn’t change one thing about our 27 years together.

We met the first day of my junior year in high school (his senior year). Due to weird circumstances this was the third high school I attended (and no, it wasn’t because I’d been kicked out of the other two). I’m riding the bus, beyond nervous about starting yet another school and he sits behind me. I listened to his conversation with another girl, feeling left out, alone and terrified. That afternoon he ends up sitting beside me and, as they say, the rest is history. A few weeks later he asked me to homecoming and we’ve been inseparable since then.

So, what’s your story? How did you and your spouse meet?

  1. Aw, that’s a sweet story, Sharon! My hubby and I actually met on a blind date set up by my younger sister who was dating my hubby’s brother. I was a junior in high school and my hubby was already graduated. We both agreed to the blind date, met in town, and that’s all it took, lol! We dated on and off through my high school years, lived together after I graduated, and married a couple years later. We’ve been married 19 years (20 this March).
    Great post!
    Happy Valentine’s Day!

  2. In Honors Chem my freshman year at college. We became friends for 10 years until I realized why nobody I had dated in all that time quite measured up. Measured up to whom? The guy who was already my BFF.

  3. In 2nd year at university, my best friend’s boyfriend wanted me to “be nice” to his best friend at a party. The only description I got was that the friend liked busty women and Huey Lewis & The News – I was a punk girl, this was not a recommendation! In Mike-speak, I interpreted all this as “can you please sleep with my friend”. I didn’t, but he was nice & funny. 3 months later, my best friend broke up with Mike, but I’m still with Mike’s best friend, 20 years later!

  4. A sweet story, Sharon.

My BFF and I went cruising around town, and these two guys were parked at City Market. We waved, they followed us around town for awhile. We finally pulled over and talked to them. We ended up riding around with them.

    That was 31 years ago.

  5. I met my Mr. Wonderful on what I call a “1/2 blind date”. I say 1/2 because–I was leaving a party out the side door for another when I spotted that sweet piece of eye candy across the room coming in the front door. He was with a few friends of mine. Being as I had to leave, I didn’t stop to chat. I couldn’t stop thinking about how cute he was, so I called my friend the next day to get the lowdown. Turned out, Mr. Wonderful didn’t go to our school, he lived the next city over. So, I asked my friend to hook us up, and she did. The following weekend, I went to the show with her and her boyfriend and Mr. Wonderful. He’s been my hubby for more than half my life.

  6. We like to tell people we met the old-fashioned way. In a bar! It was St. Patrick’s Day and of course we were in an Irish Pub. Guys were swooning all over my table and buying me and my business partner drinks. But this was this one guy looking at me from across the room. And he’s been my soul mate ever since.

  7. Well, I was dating a guy named Eric. We had fun together but knew it wasn’t going to be a long term love connection. We were both friends with Jim, who had a roommate we didn’t know. Jim and his roommate, Jon, decided to rent a house and needed a third roommate. They asked Eric to move in. I went over to see Eric, check out the new house, and meet this mysterious new roommate Jon. That was 10 years ago and Jon and I have been married almost 8. We met and I said, “Uh-oh, I’m with the wrong guy, this is the one I should be with”. The best part is that Eric had confided to me who his “dream girl” was. Shortly after we split she was single and I encouraged him to make his move. They’ve been married 7 years now. You never know what might happen if you don’t follow your heart, even in unconventional situations!

  8. I met my current husband when my ex-husband introduced us at an impromptu dinner for English cryptic crossword enthusiasts. That was during Brit Hub 1.0’s and my engagement. Brit Hub 2.1 was famous in their set, so I’d already heard about him, how smart he was, etc.

Anyway, Brit Hub 1.0 and I had a lovely marriage, very happy, very successful. Just not a forever sort of marriage. When we were ready to go to the next stage in our relationship (we’re now really good friends), I found that Brit Hub 2.1 was right there, single & lonely, in Berkshire, England. That was over 6 years ago.

Don’t worry, this marriage is for forever. 🙂

  9. Fun post today Sharon! Loving the stories. Okay, I”m warning you that most people don’t believe on how quick this all happened, but it did.

My best friend and her hubby had split up for the about the millionth time, but were in the process of getting back together. Her hubby’s friend from work…his name was Ken (still is…lol), ended up renting a limo and everyone was going bar hopping to celebrate. My friend asked me to go along to even out the numbers.

I had just broken up with someone so I made it quite clear this wasn’t a date. hehehehe. We went on that bar hopping extravaganza and had a great time and Ken and I just hit it off right from the start. Humor, likes, dislikes…everything. Well that was in March 1988, we moved in together April 1988, got married July 1988, I was pregnant by November 1988 and we bought our first house January 1989. We’re still together…as for my friend at her hubby, they had a horrible fight that night and that was the end.

Sometimes I guess you just know when it’s meant to be 🙂

  10. Loving all the great stories…. Here’s mine.

My hubby and I met on a blind date set up by a guy I was totally gaga over my freshman year of college. The guy was one of my hubby’s classmates. We met at a pizza place on the date I decided on—February 14, 1989… Yep. Valentine’s Day. The ironic thing was neither of us realized it until during the date…LOL! We dated throughout the rest of my college career (3.5 years)…long distantly most of that because he graduated the next semester. We got married on Aug 14 (yep 6 months after V D) in 1993. It hasn’t always been easy but I wouldn’t do it differently.
